Reason means truth and those who are not governed by it take the chance that someday the sunken fact will rip the bottom out of their boat. -Oliver Wendell Holmes The 21st V.V. John Memorial Inter-School Debate held on 27th October in the School Auditorium was a cumulation of intelligent assertions with rebuttals on the topic ' All Democracies Condone the Tyranny of the Majority.' The 32 participants from 16 schools debated with conviction; those in favour cited the warnings sounded by John Stuart Mill and Tocqueville that in a democracy individual freedom is denied purely on the basis of numbers, whereas the ones against the proposition argued that democracies allowed more room for free speech and greater protection of human rights. But it was agreed that in a democracy the individuals need to go out and play their roles as the citizens of a country. Ms. Madhuri Gadkari and Ms. Sevantika Bhandari judged the debate and awarded certificates to the winners. During the intermission two students Nihit Mathur and Piyush Moharana played beautiful music and Parichay Panwar accompanied them with his beatboxing. The following is the result: Best Team – Aryan Shaw and Nitesh Chouhan (Delhi Public School, Jodhpur) Best Speaker – Aryan Shaw (Delhi Public School, Jodhpur) Second Position – Shambhair Shekhar (Rajamata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur.) Third Position – Rohit Anand (St. Anne’s Sr. Sec. School, Jodhpur.) Consolation Prize – 1. Aastha Sancheti (Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School, Jodhpur) 2. Karan Singh (Happy Hours School, Jodhpur.)
